Water Filters and Ionizers – What You Need To Know

Water Filters and Ionizers Basics

What's the healthiest water to drink? We have examined the various form of water: filtered water, bottled water, ionized water, distilled, reverse osmosis, soda, and many tap waters. Finally, we have concluded that the safest and healthy water to drink is alkaline ionized anti-oxidant.

We have built this page to help the users of water filters and ionizers to find appropriate filtration when their source water has problems.

We call it the water pre-filtration web page since we are mainly concerned with using filters before a water ionizer, known as pre-filters, to use if the consumer had something in their water, then their water ionizer would not remove.

Comprehensive Water Filter Systems

Water Filtration

Many water sources carry a range of contaminants. Some typical examples of problems with town water include fluoride, chlorine, arsenic, chromium-6, lead, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides.

In well-water, there's also a possibility that the water supply is contaminated with organic sediment or contaminants. Because of this, we usually recommend finding an excellent water filter system for city water or well-water. Or get both and hook them together.

It's possible to install water filters under the sink, on the wall or the counter. They can be hooked to a particular filter-faucet, or better yet to a water ionizer, to use for the family drinking water. These aren't whole-home systems, just point-of-use methods for drinking or cooking water use.

It's very cost effective to concentrate on the greatest quality filtration attempts on the water you have. Whole house filtration is an excellent idea also, but for that we recommend you visit local hardware or water Filtration Company.

EPA Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality

Safe Drinking Water

Through time the EPA has developed guidelines for drinking water quality. They manage near 100 contaminants, and they do a reasonably good job protecting consumers from potential toxins in their drinking water.

These are the six basic categories of contaminants that are regulated by the EPA.

  • Disinfectants
  • Organic Chemicals
  • Disinfection Byproducts
  • Radioactive Elements
  • Inorganic Chemicals
  • Microorganisms

Continue reading to know about all the contaminants that the EPA regulates and our guidance on those kinds of water filters and ionizers that remove them. Some water filters eliminate a high number of pollutants, and many others are developed for only a few specific contaminants. Employed in combination, it is possible to filter everything known to be detrimental from your water, while leaving the good, healthy minerals in it.

How Can You Learn What's in Your Water?

You'll find out what is on your water by contacting your municipal water company. They can tell you where to look for their water quality report on the internet and answer questions about water hardness and TDS also.

How to Interpret Your Water Quality Report

When you're looking at any water quality report, you will need to know both of these definitions.

MCLG: Maximum Contaminant Level Goal. This is the degree, of a contaminant, below which there is not any expected health-risk.

MCL: Maximum Contaminant Level. The highest level of a contaminant allowed in the water.

The municipal water companies have a target (the MCLG) to eliminate most or all potentially harmful contaminants in the drinking water.

Some components are toxic in large amounts but aren't proven to be harmful, or it is very rare to be dangerous in small quantities. The body might even require them as trace-minerals in tiny amounts. It's a big job that the water businesses take on, to continuously examine and clean up your water, but most municipalities can do an excellent job of cleaning up the water which comes to your faucet at a fairly reasonable price.

It's very likely your water quality exceeds the MCLG in many contaminants, but doesn't exceed the MCL. It's punishable for the water district to not meet the MCL and the MCLG is placed there as a target, but not enforced.

The reason the MGLG isn't enforced it there are many things to take into account, including prices and the environment.

  • The risks are infrequent given the MCL of each contaminant isn't exceeded
  • The water you drink is just a small part of the water that comes into your home, most goes actually down the toilet.
  • You as a customer can filter the contaminants from your drinking water for pennies on the dollar.
  • For the municipalities to invest the millions of additional dollars purifying the water better may do more harm than good for both the environment and for you.

After all, for you the maximum quality of drinking water, it's undeniably the best idea for you to filter your municipal water, which is almost ideal.

Shower and Bath Filters

Shower and Bath Filters

Filtering tub and shower water is a worthy venture. Many contaminants, particularly chlorine, can be breathed in or absorbed into the skin while bathing or showering. Chlorine on your hair and skin may cause them to dry out. Also, it would be good to filter it out. For those who get a whole-house KDF filter system that will also do the same thing, but it can be more expensive than the point-of-use shower filter.

Water Ionizers

Water Filtration & Ionizers

It's important to be sure that your water is alkalizing rather than acidic. The water that you drink should be equally well-filtered for contaminants and have an alkaline pH. Many types of research tell us that we will need to alkalize our own bodies and beverage alkaline PH water to remain healthy and fit as we age.

There are two types of alkalizing/ionizing systems which can make your water pH ideal for drinking:

Electric Water Ionizers: One huge benefit of electrical water ionizers is they are continuous-flow filtration systems. In other words, they're always ready to provide you with the exact amount of ionized water daily. There's no “wait time." Additionally, electric water ionizers clean fluoride, because fluoride is acidic and will be eliminated from the acidic flow for the most part.

Filtering/Alkalizing [non-electric] systems/Ionizing/, like the Alkaline Ionizer by AOK and pH Pitcher: Non-electric alkaline water ionizers are filter-systems which use the principles which were initiated and established by Dr. Hayashi [of adding magnesium to water in the presence of magnetized ceramics to ionize the water].

Non-electric water ionizers are often inexpensive than electric ones. They do need to re-charge themselves between applications since the time-release magnesium is only available in limited amounts. After filtering a few quarts, you'd typically have to wait about a half-hour for the outer layer of the time-release calcium balls to soften up. This is known as re-charging.

Water filters and ionizers, both are considered as filter systems since they eliminate contaminants from the water before ionizing the water. Portable and Non-Electric water ionizers are extremely popular since they can be taken everywhere and there is not much initial set-up cost involved.

Electric water ionizers are most preferable because they ionize all the healthy, alkaline minerals in the water (making them bio-available) and they produce plenty of antioxidants from the water (higher than non-electric water ionizers). They can usually be transported, but it is easier and better to install them by the sink and leave them there merely.

Water Quality & Filtering Water

Water Filtration & Ionizers

Water filtration isn't complicated. We're pleased to help you to discover about your tap water, so you have confidence in knowing what has to be filtered from it. The simplest way to do this is to contact a water treatment company that offers a free Water Quality Report for your area.

For those who have a filtration system or a water ionizer already, you may next need to analyze whether all the contaminants in your water will be filtered with your water magnesium to water in the present system.

Maintaining Your Water Ionizer

Vinegar Wash your Ionizer

Water ionizers mainly do not like the following problems with source water:

  • sodium from ion-exchange water softeners,
  • excessive hardness,
  • Iron, sulfur, copper or most heavy metals.

If the area you live has hard water [over 200 ppm of hardness] with additional calcium in your water, it does not mean that your water is bad, but it might damage water systems, such as water ionizers and water heaters.

If you do not do something to take care of the water hardness and additional TDS [total dissolved solids] you may finally have a problem. Hard water is possibly an issue for water filters and ionizers. Also, medium-hard water can lead to a water ionizer to reduce its great ionization results or water-flow-rate with time, because of scaling deposits on the plates.

Water Test Kits: With these, you can easily find out whether your water contains excessive amounts of the most common water impurities. We advise using this whenever you have well-water or are unsure of your water quality.

Whole House Water Filter Systems

Aquasana EQ-1000

Most individuals don't have to use an entire house water filter system, but it's one of the water filtration options. There are many whole house water filter systems available:

  • Whole house fiber sediment filters: They are just occasionally required and are quite affordable. If you use well-water, live in an older home or area, the whole house sediment filter could be useful.
  • KDF Whole-House Filters: KDF Filters are the most appropriate for removal of iron, sulfur, copper, and heavy metals. They also remove chlorine.
  • Ion-Exchange Units or Whole House Water Softeners: We do not usually recommend these, but some people cannot avoid it.

We advise that you contact a local filtration company or hardware store to assist you with your whole house filtration. They can understand the water quality issues to your area better.

EPA-Regulated Contaminants & Filter-Suggestions

best reverse osmosis system

For the most part from the US, our drinking water quality is excellent, better than most other nations. Being industrialized and modernized makes it hard sometimes for us to get perfect water, but that is why so much consideration is given to controlling your water source. There's an ever-growing difficulty that the water companies have to confront with agricultural and industrial chemicals, and of course pharmaceuticals. The municipalities can only work according to the funds available to them. It's up to us to track and further improve the quality of the water we consume ourselves if we wish to live the longest and healthiest lives possible. Don't believe for a moment that bottled water is a fantastic solution. The best quality of drinking water you can get is when you filter it yourself. Filtering water isn't difficult.

As you go through the article, you will find an overview of the Drinking Water Contaminants, which are regulated by the EPA. Since they are known to be linked with diseases, it is great to attempt and eliminate them from your own water if your water gets more than the EPA guidelines for that contaminant. The list is coordinated from the EPA's categories.

Disinfectants

  • Chloramines [related to eye/nose irritation and nausea ]
  • Chlorine [related to eye/nose irritation ]
  • Chlorine Dioxide [associated with nervous system disorders and anemia]

How to Remove: Active carbon filters are extremely powerful, but Supercarbon filters [catalytic carbon] are better. A blend of Supercarbon and KDF filters are even better yet. UltraWater filters are possibly the best since they will get rid of all three up to 99.99%. However, UltraWater filters are only available for specific water ionizers.

Radioactive Elements

  • Beta particles and photon emitters
  • Alpha particles
  • Radium
  • Uranium

How to Remove: It was that radioactive particles could only be filtered by reverse osmosis, but the  Vesta water ionizers or the UltraWater filters for Jupiter may also eliminate these from the water.

Filtering Fluoride

Water Filtration & Ionizers

We recommend that you eliminate fluoride from your municipal water if your water company adds it. In nature, one finds small quantities of fluoride, and in minimal amounts, it's very likely to be fine, but many researchers are discovering learning disabilities and Alzheimer's disease related to fluoridated water. Fluoride toothpaste comprises warnings that consuming the equivalent of no more than one milligram of fluoride should alert you so much that you go immediately for emergency treatment.

Water Ionizers Remove Fluoride! There are numerous methods to eliminate fluoride from your water, but the best of all ways, by real Fluoride testing, is using a water ionizer. Fluoride is an acidic mineral, and so once you ionize the water, you'll remove most of it to the acidic flow [which comes from the bottom hose].

  • Fluoride filters are also good, but a limited under the outcomes which ionizing the water has on Fluoride removal. The water flowing through a fluoride filter [Lead, Arsenic & Fluoride Filter] must be in touch with the press long enough to make a bond. So, if it's a 1-liter filter the initial liter you pour from it'll be much better filtered compared to let's say if you're pouring several liters at a time. Just ensure that your water has sufficient contact time with the filter media.
  • Carbon Filters: Another way of eliminating fluoride is a slow flow through carbon filters. You won't eliminate it all this way, but you will get rid of some.
  • Reverse osmosis. RO removes Fluoride, but the elimination of reverse osmosis is so intense that it eliminates all the nutritious minerals from the water also. Doing this isn't a fantastic trade-off since the diseases associated with drinking water that's too void in minerals [such as osteoporosis and cancer] are awful also.

Industrial Waste and Herbicide Runoff

Industrial Waste

A number of chemicals from herbicide runoff and industrial wastes (adrenal gland, kidney, circulatory, reproductive disorders, liver, associated with cancer), these generally fall under either inorganic or organic chemicals, listed above.

What’s the way to remove them? Active carbon filters are extremely powerful, but Supercarbon filters [catalytic carbon] are better. A blend of Supercarbon and KDF filters are also better yet.

UltraWater filters are probably the best since they will get rid of all three up to 99.99%. However, UltraWater filters are only available for specific water ionizers.

Pharmaceuticals

Pharmaceuticals are now found in water supplies in nearly about any municipality. These generally fall under either organic chemicals or inorganic compounds, listed above. How to Remove Them? Active carbon filters are extremely powerful, but Supercarbon filters [catalytic carbon] are better. A blend of Supercarbon and KDF filters are also better yet. UltraWater filters are perhaps the best since they will get rid of all three up to 99.99%. However, UltraWater filters are only available for specific water ionizers.

Water Filters and Filter Media

Filter media, Water filters, and filter types are similar tools. If you know these tools, you can have far better control of the quality of your drinking water. Although there are infinite ways to combine filter media, there are only a limited number of filter-media types, so it is easy enough for everyone to understand.

Make sure to focus on the ratings of the filter you intend to buy so that you can see precisely what that filters will manage. Also look closely at the life-span of this filter, because eventually, any fantastic filter will lose its capacity to filter. The lesser chemicals and dissolved solids the water contains, the longer real life a filter has. So, if you reside in an extreme-hard-water area, with a lot of contaminants in your water, you might need to adjust your filters more often. The gallons evaluations on filters are merely averages, and while they're great for many situations, your water supply does influence the length of time the filters are most likely to do you good.

Carbon Filter Media

Carbon is a terrific filter media and will bond with and remove many contaminants. It's a superb bond-creating component and is proven to have the ability to bind well with many substances. There are a variety of kinds of carbon filter media [i.e., carbon block, super-carbon (catalytic carbon), active carbon].

Some carbon filters will only enhance taste/odor and eliminate chlorine, while some are going to remove asbestos, heavy metals, lead, mercury, and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). Caution: carbon filter media won't eliminate arsenic, fluoride, chromium-6, nitrates, nitrites, or radioactive elements. You should take a look at the specifications of your carbon filter to determine just what it's rated to eliminate.

Carbon Block

Carbon block filters are a fantastic idea. They're commonly more efficient than loose granular carbon because using a block it makes the water to flow through the carbon versus letting the potential for water channeling, avoiding the carbon. A solid-block filter is better at eliminating a few things, such as sediment, than a granular filter. Additionally, it is better at the removal of anything big enough not to fit through the pores of the block.

Granular Activated Carbon

Activated carbon is treated with oxygen to generate the carbon have several times larger surface area than usual charcoal carbon. With a larger surface area, the activated carbon can bond with a lot more contaminants and remove them more easily: for instance, GAC readily removes many pollutants, such as chlorine. Granular activated carbon may even eliminate some chloramine if it flows slowly enough. However, a much better filter for eliminating compounds, such as chloramine, are super-carbon [also called catalytic carbon]. GAC filters have been tested and rated for the contaminants that they will remove.

Catalytic Carbon [Super-Carbon]

Catalytic carbon is a unique proprietary formulation of carbon that will effectively eliminate everything mentioned for GAC carbon, discussed above, but will also eliminate chloramine. Chloramine is a blend of ammonia plus chlorine and is used in several municipalities for disinfection. Since it's very stable, it's quite tricky to eliminate from the water, until Super-carbon, it was only possible to eliminate chloramines with a moderate flow through multiple activated carbon filters.

Activated Alumina Filter Media

Activated alumina helps to get rid of Arsenic and Fluoride from the water. It will trap the following hard-to-remove components in the filter with a definite chemical bonding procedure.

UltraWater Filter

It's a good block filter created with a proprietary combination of all the ideal filter media, and as a result of its block formation, the water is forced through the filter press rather than channeled. The problem with loose filter media is that the water can and does find ways around the media, and so avoids getting complete contaminant removal. The UltraWater filter was created using NASA's space technology of mixing all the filter components into a solid cube. This technology is efficient even in the elimination of difficult compounds, such as chloramine, and elements, such as Chromium 6 and Fluoride. Because of this, the UltraWater filter is a powerful filter for removal of pharmaceuticals. It had been tested and proven to remove up to 99.999 percent of pharmaceuticals, fluoride, nitrates, and many other difficult chemicals.

Ceramic Filters

Ceramic filters have microscopic pores which will not let microorganisms or sediments through. They don't eliminate chemicals unless they also contain another filter media, such as active carbon, within them.

Ultra .01 Micron Filter Fibers

Ultra .01 Micron Filter Fibers are sometimes built into specific multi-stage filters [like some water ionizers have .01 filter choices]. The fibers are so small that they won't permit any germs through, even viruses! Therefore, in their efficiency, they're much like ceramic filters, just better.

KDF

KDF is an abbreviation for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion Media and is a filter media composed of an alloy of zinc and aluminum used to effectively eliminate dozens of chemical, organic and heavy metal contaminants from water.

KDF is used in restaurants, hospitals, municipal water treatment and can be found in several filters nowadays. KDF is scientifically formulated to eliminate more chlorine, chloramines, and heavy metals. Not only is KDF successful in removing contaminants, like compounds and heavy metals, but it will also kill algae and fungi and will prevent bacterial growth.

There are two primary variants of KDF: KDF 55 and KDF 85. Both KDF 55 and KDF 85 are considered the same, but KDF 85 is better than KDF 55. It'll remove everything that KDF 55 eliminates, but also removes sulfur and iron exceptionally well. KDF filters are equally suitable for chlorine and chloramine removal [and other man-made chemicals, such as found in soaps].

KDF works best when it is used along with active carbon or better yet, Supercarbon. You will often find a multi-stage filter that uses KDF 55 or 85 among the stages.

KDF 85 is specially formulated for sulfur, iron and heavy metal removal. Based on water flow-rate, KDF 85 will eliminate up to 99 percent of lead, iron, sulfur, mercury, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals. For those who have any issue whatsoever with flavor in your water, we highly suggest getting the KDF 85 filter.

Sediment Filters

Sediment can fill up and clog or fill more costly filters. The simplest thing to filter from the water, and lowest, is sediment. For those who have a lot of sediment in your water, you'd save money by buying an inexpensive sediment filter to put before the rest of the filters. There are whole-house sediment filters in addition to point-of-use sediment filters. We would suggest using both if your water is coming out of a well or for any reason comprises a whole lot of sediment. Sediment filters are usually assembled into multi-layer carbon filters. Carbon block or ceramic filters create great sediment filters also.

Tourmaline

Tourmaline is a semi-precious gem. Its infrared characteristics and converts water into smooth alkaline water. Tourmaline also is antibacterial and deodorant qualities. Treated water when used on the skin provides a superb effect of absorption and moisturizing.
