PUR 3-Stage Advanced Faucet Water Filter Review

Compared with most other faucet water filters, this PUR is on the pricier side.

But the extra cost is worth for the extra features and superior filtration.

The PUR advanced faucet filter uses a 3-stage filtration process that includes a natural mineralization filter that improves the taste and enhances the health benefits of your water.

The 1-click installation process is the easiest of any faucet filter we've reviewed, and filter replacement is easy.

Overall, this is one of the best faucet filters for most homes.

Filtering Performance

PUR 3-Stage Advanced

This PUR 3-stage is one of the few faucet filters that uses multiple filtration stages. Most use just one media, usually activated carbon.

But this PUR filter uses three stages which greatly improves filtration performance. It’s not as thorough as an under sink filter or large countertop filter - but for its size, this faucet filter does a really good job.

Here are the three filtration stages:

  1. Sediment Filter: Traps sediment and other particulates including rust and silt. This enhances filtering performance and prolongs the life the other filters.
  2. Activated carbon filter: This is the heart of the PUR water filter. The carbon media removes a wide range of impurities including heavy metals like lead, microbial cysts and organic chemicals. It also improves the taste of water by reducing chlorine.
  3. Mineralization filter: To make your water sweeter and healthier, the PUR filter includes one final stage where water passes over natural minerals.

The output water is as good as bottled water. It contains no heavy metals or chemicals and has that crisp refreshing taste you get from expensive bottled water.

If you buy bottled water, then the PUR faucet filter will definitely save you money.

Not for Well Water

If you receive well water, don't buy this filter. It is designed to work only with chlorinated city water.

That’s because the filtration media inside cannot remove the impurities found in well water. More specifically, the filter will not remove total dissolved solids like magnesium, calcium and ferrous iron. It also does not remove harmful waterborne microorganisms which could be in your water.

Filter Life Indicator

All PUR faucet filters include a convenient filter indicator.

It’s a small LED light that blinks in a specific color to let you know that your filter is in good condition (green), almost at the end of its life (yellow) or in need of immediate replacement (red).

Instead of guessing when to replace the filter, you’ll know exactly when to do it.

This prevents you from replacing the filter too early, saving you money - or worse, waiting until water tastes awful again.

The PUR filter cartridge has a capacity of about 100 gallons. So it should last 2-3 months for the average family.

Installation & Maintenance

PUR Advanced water filter

Faucet water filters are generally easy to install. The PUR filter stands out for it’s incredibly easy set up process.

The company calls it a 1-click install.

 Here’s what it involves:
  • Remove the aerator from your faucet and replace it with the right adaptor (the filter comes with several).
  • Open the filter cap and put the filter cartridge inside.
  • Attach the filter to the faucetwith one click. No need to twist the filter to tighten it.Turn the flow selector to allow the water to pass through the filter.

The entire process takes less than 10 minutes.

The easy installation makes the PUR filter perfect for traveling, too. You can click it into place in a hotel and have clean filtered water in a couple of minutes.

Once you install the filter, flush it for a few minute to allow carbon fines to get out.

Replacing the cartridge is just as easy. Just open the cap, remove the old filter and put a new one in.

I recommend replacing the cartridge as soon as the indicator light turns yellow.

No other maintenance is required.

Note: This PUR faucet filter is compatible with most standard faucets except sprayer and pull out faucets. Select the adaptor that fits your particular faucet.

What We Like The Most About The PUR Advanced Faucet Filter

PUR 3-Stage faucet water filter

The number one thing we love is the truly impressive level of filtration.

With three stages it does a better job than most to make your water safer and remove unpleasant tastes and smells.

If you are concerned about lead or mercury in your city water or you want to get rid of the chlorine taste, this PUR advanced faucet filter will do the trick.

We also love the easy 1-click installation. No other faucet filter is this easy to install.

Even if you’ve never used any kind of water filter before, you’ll have the PUR filter ready to go in under 10 minutes. No tools, it just clicks into place.

We also like that the PUR filter includes a mineralization stage, something you won’t find in most faucet filters. While adding minerals is not essential to water safety, it gives the water a nice fresh taste. Don’t be surprised if you like your tap water better than the bottled water you are used to.

What We Don’t Like

In terms of filtration performance, our biggest issue is it doesn’t filter well water. But this is not just the fault of the PUR filter.

It’s hard to find any faucet filter that can treat well water. The best option is an under sink system, which is more expensive and takes more time and effort to install.

This is an understandable issue.

But what’s unacceptable is the PUR filter's durability. Many customers have complained that it breaks and starts leaking in a year or less.

This is an issue we see with many faucet filters, so it's not exactly a deal breaker in this class. Because most are made from plastic, they wear out quickly resulting in unrepairable leaks.

At least the filter carries a one year warranty. If it breaks before then, you can request the company to send you a new one.

The PUR Advanced Faucet Water Filter Is Perfect For You If...

  • You are looking for a faucet water filter that will last for more than a year.

Our Bottom Line

PUR Faucet Water Filter

The PUR 3-stage filter delivers the best water filtration you'll find in a faucet filter, fresher-tasting water and a laughably easy 1-click installation.
