The Epic Nalgene OG water bottle filter is a collaboration between Nalgene, one of the earliest manufacturers of outdoor water bottles, and Epic Water Filters, the maker of a wide range of high-performance water filters.
The Epic Nalgene OG water bottle filter is designed for everyday use at the office, school, around town, during fieldwork on day hikes.
The included Urban Filter system uses carbon fiber mesh to remove more than 70 water contaminants including chlorine, sediment and heavy metals.
Notably, the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle with the Urban filter does not remove microbes like bacteria and viruses. So it’s not ideal for well water or outdoor use with non-treated water (e.g. from a stream).
But because the Nalgene OG uses an interchangeable filter system, you can swap out the Urban filter with Epic’s Outdoor Adventure Filter that removes waterborne microbes.

The Epic Nalgene OG water bottle uses a carbon filter, so it removes the same stuff other carbon filters do. It also filters out additional contaminants most other carbon filters cannot handle.
In total, the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle filter eliminates over 70 impurities found in tap water. These include odors and tastes like chlorine, chemicals like pesticides and VOCs, heavy metals like lead and arsenic, microplastics and sediment. You can see the full list of contaminants and test results here(PDF).
If you hate the taste of your tap water and often result to carrying bottled water around, the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle is a life changing buy.
Most people using the bottle say the filtered water tastes better than any bottled water they’ve ever drunk. The Everyday filter does a great job removing the taste and smell of chlorine and other chemicals in water.
You should however note that carbon filter in the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle struggles to remove extra-strong tastes and odors such as hydrogen sulfide, strong metallic tastes or a strong chalky taste caused by water passing through limestone.
This is why we don’t recommend the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle filter for use with well water, which typically has strong unpleasant flavors.
But if you receive treated municipal water, the Epic Nalgene OG easily eliminates chlorine taste and other mild aftertastes.
Interchangeable Filter System
The Epic Nalgene OG water bottle is meant for use with treated municipal water. It comes with an Everyday Use Urban filter.
The Urban filter does not remove microorganisms like E. Coli and Cryptosporidium. So if you plan to go camping or on a long hike, the Urban filter won’t offer complete protection.
What you need is the Epic Outdoor filter. Thanks to the bottle’s interchangeable filter system, you can buy the outdoor filter and swap it with the Urban filter; no need to buy a new bottle.
The Outdoor filter is perfect for camping, hikes and other situation where you are likely to get water from a stream, well, river or some other untreated source.
In addition to chemicals and heavy metals, the Outdoor filter also eliminates common waterborne microorganisms.
Easy to Use Straw System
A common problem with water bottle filters is the difficulty in sucking water through the straw filter. A few swigs of water can quickly tire your mouth.
Fortunately, the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle has no such issue. Sucking water though the straw is easy, even for a child or someone elderly.
The Everyday filter in the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle is good for 75 gallons. The specific filter lifespan period varies depending on how often you use your water bottle.
Noting that the bottle holds a quarter gallon of water, try to estimate how many bottles of water you down every day.
If it’s one bottle a day, then it’ll last 300 days, or almost a year. If you drink, on average, two bottles a day, you’ll need to replace the filter 2-3 times a year.
Keep in mind that the actual lifespan may be less than the stated 75 gallon if your water quality is not so good. The more bad stuff the filter has to remove from your tap water, the sooner you’ll need to replace it.
You’ll know you need a new filter when you start experiencing the taste of your unfiltered tap water when you drink from the bottle. After getting used to the fresh taste of the filtered water, it’s easy to tell when something’s off.
As for cleaning the bottle, Epic Water Filters recommends handwashing the bottle, straw and lid. They are also dishwasher safe.
The filter itself should only be wiped clean on the outside with warm water (no soap).
What We Like The Most About the Epic Nalgene OG Water Bottle Filter
We love the convenience of the Epic Nalgene OG water bottle. Instead of constantly buying expensive bottled water in eco-damaging plastic bottles, you have one re-usable bottle that you refill from your tap.
When the water runs out, look for the nearest tap and refill the bottle (just make sure it is treated municipal water).
We also love the Epic Nalgene OG’s filtration performance. Many other water bottles have carbon filters, but they don’t remove nearly as many impurities as the Nalgene OG Everyday filter.
Quality of both the bottle and filter is excellent. The Nalgene bottle looks and feels like it’ll last for years and we’ve not seen many complaints about leaking.
It’s great that the bottle comes in many different colors, so you can choose the one that best matches your style.
What We Don't Like About It
This is not a deal breaker, but it’s slightly annoying nonetheless. The filter doesn’t reach the bottom of the bottle, so you cannot empty the bottle completely.
This is only an issue if you are in the middle of nowhere and the last bit of water is the only one you have to drink. But in most cases, you can just refill the bottle from a tap and keep drinking.
