Best Refrigerator Water Filters

Top 8 Best Refrigerator Water Filters 2020: Reviews & Guide

Shopping for a refrigerator water filter?

You’ve come to the right place.

A refrigerator water filter reduces common contaminants from the water coming into your refrigerator. It also reduces odors and tastes brought about by chlorine and other chemicals.

A refrigerator water filter greatly improves the quality of the water from the fridge. It tastes better, smells fresh, and has fewer potentially harmful contaminants.

It also improves the quality of ice. Ice made with filtered water is clearer, tastes better, and melts slower in drinks.

When you are buying a replacement water filter for your refrigerator, it’s generally best to buy from the same brand as your refrigerator.

But some companies sell compatible aftermarket refrigerator water filters. Just make sure you check that the filter is compatible with your particular refrigerator model. Also, check that it’s NSF certified to be safe and effective in removing impurities.

What’s in This Buying Guide?

In this buying guide, we recommend the best refrigerator water filters for various refrigerator brands, including LG, Samsung, and Kenmore.

Most of our recommendations are OEM filters. They are more expensive than aftermarket and generic filters, but they provide better filtration performance (they remove more impurities) and have no leaking or clogging issues.

But we’ve also recommended cheaper aftermarket alternatives, where we could find compatible ones. We’ve also included a few external filters that you can hook up to your refrigerator.

Note that conventional refrigerator water filters do not filter out serious contaminants like bacteria, protozoa, and heavy metals. They mostly remove chlorine and other tastes and odors. So you should only use them with treated tap water.

If you want a filter that can remove microorganisms and most other impurities, get a reverse osmosis system

You can then buy a refrigerator kit to connect the RO system to your refrigerator’s icemaker.

Best Refrigerator Water Filters 2020: Reviews

1. Best Water Filter for Whirlpool & KitchenAid Refrigerators: EveryDrop by Whirlpool

EveryDrop by Whirlpool

If you are looking for an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) filter for your Whirlpool or KitchenAid refrigerator, we recommend EveryDrop.

It's also compatible with Maytag, Amana, and JennAir refrigerators.

Pros

  • NSF certified to reduce a wide range of impurities.
  • Easy to install.
  • Strong water flow.
  • No leaks.

Cons

  • Pricey.

Our Review

best water filter for refrigerator

OEM refrigerator filters are usually pricey, but they are worth the cost.

Compared to compatible generic filters, the EveryDrop filter reduces a lot more impurities and has a stronger flow rate, allowing you to fill a glass in less time.

EveryDrop has three important NSF/ANSI certifications: 42, 53, and 401.

NSF 42 covers aesthetic impurities that affect the taste and smell of water, such as chlorine. NSF 53 covers impurities that are harmful to your health, including chemicals and certain heavy metals.

NSF 401 covers emerging impurities such as DEET (commonly found in insect repellents), Ibuprofen, and Bisphenol-A.

With these three certifications, the EveryDrop filter provides better protection than most aftermarket refrigerator filters.

Note that this filter only works with refrigerators that use Filter 4. This includes most Whirlpool and KitchenAid refrigerators. Check that your old filter has the model number UKF8001 or 4396395.

The EveryDrop filter has a filtration capacity of 200 gallons or about 6 months.

Issues & Limitations

As with most OEM filters, the EveryDrop filter is expensive. You'll spend close to $100 every year on replacement filters.

But it's worth it. Compared to aftermarket filters, the EveryDrop filter by Whirlpool filters out more impurities and has a stronger flow rate.

Bottom Line

While there are plenty of aftermarket options for Whirlpool and KitchenAid refrigerators, none matches the filtration performance of EveryDrop.

If you don't mind the price difference, go for it. Remember, you can also use EveryDrop in your Amana, Maytag, or JennAir refrigerator.

2. Best Water Filter for Samsung Refrigerators: Samsung DA29-00020B Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement

Samsung DA29-00020B Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement

Yes, there are cheaper aftermarket filters for Samsung refrigerators. However, most only have NSF 42 certification, which covers chlorine and other aesthetic impurities.

In contrast, the original Samsung DA29-00020B filter has NSF 42 and 53 certifications. NSF 53 covers dangerous impurities.

Though it's more expensive, the original Samsung DA29-00020B water filter is the best choice for your Samsung refrigerator.

Prefer a cheaper aftermarket filter? Try PureLine. It has NSF 42 and 372 certifications. NSF 372 covers lead reduction.

Pros

  • Reduces a wide range of impurities, including cysts and heavy metals.
  • Easy to fit.
  • No leaks.

Cons

  • Pricey.

Our Review

best water filter for samsung refrigerator

The Samsung DA29-00020B replacement water filter is designed to reduce both aesthetic and harmful contaminants.

It reduces substances like chlorine that affect how the water tastes and smells. It also reduces more serious contaminants like lead, microbial cysts, VOCs, and other heavy metals and chemicals.

The NSF 42 and 53 certifications ensure you get the best water protection and ice quality.

Like most other refrigerator water filters, the Samsung DA29-00020B lasts 6 months or about 300 gallons. Most Samsung refrigerators have filter life indicators to remind you when you get a new filter.

Issues & Limitations

Compared to aftermarket filters like PURELINE, the Samsung DA29-00020B refrigerator filter is pricey. But considering that it removes more impurities, we think it's worth it.

Also, the OEM filter is less likely to have leakage problems compared to generic replacements.

For the price, however, we'd have liked to see NSF 401 certification, which covers emerging impurities like DEET, Estrone, Ibuprofen, and Naproxen.

Bottom Line

If you are on a budget, the PURELINE aftermarket filter for Samsung refrigerators offers decent protection and improves water taste.

But if you want assured protection from a wide range of chemicals and heavy metals, go with the original Samsung DA29-00020B refrigerator filter.

3. Best Water Filter for GE Refrigerators: General Electric MWF Refrigerator Water Filter

General Electric MWF Refrigerator Water Filter

If you have a General Electric refrigerator that uses a GWF, GWFA, GWF01, GWF06, or MWFA water filter, this is the best replacement.

It comes with NSF certification and 6-month filter life.

If you prefer a cheaper aftermarket filter, try the 3-pack MARRIOTTO water filter or the 2-pack Waterspecialist water filter.

The MARRIOTTO filter only has NSF 42 certification while the Waterspecialist filter boasts NSF 42 and 53 certification, similar to the original GE filter.

Pros

  • NSF certified to reduce a wide range of contaminants.
  • Easy to install with no tools.
  • Good flow rate.

Cons

  • Expensive.
  • No NSF 401 certification.

Our Review

best refrigerator water filter brands

But if you are on a budget, the Waterspecialist filter is the second-best choice. It has the same NSF certifications as the original GE filter, but at a fraction of the price (a 2-pack is cheaper than GE single-pack).

The GE MWF filter's NSF 42 and 53 certification means it does far more than just make your water taste (and smell) better.

In addition to removing chlorine, it also reduces harmful impurities such as lead, benzene, asbestos, microbial cysts, and many other harmful chemicals and heavy metals.

The flow rate is good – you'll fill a glass in no time. The filter is also easy to install, and you don't need any tools.

To ensure compatibility, make sure the filter you are replacing is one of the following models: GWF, GWFA, GWF01, GWF06, or MWFA.

The MWF filter has a filter capacity of 300 gallons or about 6 months. Your refrigerator will remind you when it's time to order a new filter.

Issues & Limitations

The original GE MWF filter is much more expensive than aftermarket filters. But in return, you get better water protection (the OEM filter reduces more impurities) and no leakage problems.

The only thing we'd have liked to see is NSF 401 certification. GE says the filter removes some of the impurities covered by NSF/ANSI 401 like Ibuprofen and progesterone, but the actual certification would be more reassuring.

Some customers have complained about the lack of NSF 372 certification for lead reduction. However, this is not necessary as it is covered under the NSF/ANSI 53 certification, which the GE filter has.

Bottom Line

If you have a GE refrigerator, you can't go wrong with the OEM filter replacement.

4. Best Water Filter for Kenmore Refrigerators: Kenmore 9990 Refrigerator Water Filter

Kenmore 9990 Refrigerator Water Filter

The Kenmore 9990 water filter is compatible with a wide range of Kenmore refrigerator models, including 79309, 77244, and many others.

To check whether it's compatible with your fridge, you can enter your model number on the Amazon page. Alternatively, remove your current filter and check if it has any of the following part numbers: CLS30320001, 5231JA2006E or 5231JA2005A.

If it's not compatible with your refrigerator, check other Kenmore filters, including the Kenmore 9980-KM, Kenmore 9084, and Kenmore 9082.

You can see all the Kenmore refrigerator water filters here. This mini-review is specifically for the Kenmore 9990 filter.

Pros

  • NSF certified to remove a wide range of impurities.
  • Easy to install – no tools needed.
  • Good water flow rate.

Cons

  • Pricey.
  • No NSF 401 certification.

Our Review

Kenmore 9990

The Kenmore 9990 filter comes with NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 certifications.

It reduces chlorine and other tastes and odors from water. It also reduces harmful impurities, including certain chemicals, heavy metals, and microbial cysts.

The filter has a standard lifespan of 200 gallons or about six months. You should see the filter light come on when it's almost time to replace the filter.

The flow rate is good at around 0.5 gallons a minute. There haven't been any complaints regarding clogging or leaks, common problems with aftermarket filters.

Issues & Limitations

Despite being more expensive than non-OEM filters, the Kenmore 9990 lacks the NSF/ANSI 401 certification for emerging chemical impurities such as Ibuprofen and DEET.

Bottom Line

The Kenmore 9990 refrigerator filter is pricey, but it provides the best protection and the assurance of reliability.

But if you are on a budget, try the ICEPURE UKF8001 refrigerator water filter. It is compatible with select Kenmore refrigerators. On the downside, it only carries NSF 53 certification.

5. Best Water Filter for LG Refrigerators: LG LT700P Refrigerator Water Filter

LG LT700P Refrigerator Water Filter

This is a genuine LG OEM replacement filter. It fits most LG refrigerator models, including LSSB2791ST, LFX33974ST, and LFX31935ST.

The Amazon product page has a list of all compatible refrigerators. You can also enter your refrigerator model number to check for compatibility.

Like most OEM refrigerator water filters, the LG LT700P filter comes with NSF 42 and 53 certifications, which provides protection from both aesthetic and dangerous impurities.

Pros

  • Original LG refrigerator filter.
  • Easy to install.
  • NSF certified.

Cons

  • Pricey.

Our Review

best water filter for lg refrigerator

The LG LT700P uses activated carbon to remove chlorine and other tastes and orders as well as harmful impurities like arsenic, lead, and chemicals.

Similar to most refrigerator water filters, it lacks the NSF 401 certification for the reduction of emerging impurities like Ibuprofen and other trace chemicals.

The filter has a standard 6-month or 200-gallon lifespan.

It's super easy to fit into your refrigerator, and, so far, we've not heard about any leakage or clogging problems.

Issues & Limitations

Original refrigerator filters are the best, but they come at a cost. Compared to aftermarket filters, the original LG LT700P filter is more than twice as expensive.

Considering the relatively short lifespan, you'll be spending quite a bit of money every year on replacement filters.

If you are on a budget, try the ICEPURE PRO NSF-certified filter. It is compatible with refrigerators that use the LG LT700P filter.

Even better, it has the same NSF 42 and 53 certifications as the OEM filter. Oh, and you get a two-pack for less than the price of a single OEM filter.

Customers who've used the aftermarket filter say the water tastes just as good as with the original filter, and there's no leaking.

Bottom Line

If you have an LG refrigerator, you have two options. If you prefer the assurance of the original LG filter, get the LG LT700P filter. It's pricier but gives you peace of mind.

If you want to save money on filter replacements, the ICEPURE PRO is a much more affordable alternative.

Your choice.

6. Best Aftermarket Refrigerator Water Filter: AmazonBasics

AmazonBasics Refrigerator Water Filter

AmazonBasics is best known for its great value products. This extends to refrigerator water filters. They sell affordable aftermarket filters for popular refrigerator brands, including Samsung, LG, and GE.

Some of their filters even have the same NSF 42 + 53 certifications as the original filters.

Pros

  • Good value for money.
  • NSF certification.
  • Easy to install.

Cons

  • Some filters may lack certain NSF certifications.

Our Review

Here are the available AmazonBasics refrigerator water filters for different brands.

For GE Refrigerators: AmazonBasics Replacement GE MWF Refrigerator Water Filter Premium Filtration

AmazonBasics Aftermarket Refrigerator Water Filter

With their premium filtration filters, you actually get better contaminant reduction than the original filter.

The AmazonBasics GE MWF filter is more expensive than other aftermarket filters, but it removes more impurities than even the original GE filter. Here are some quick highlights.

  • Pack of 2
  • NSF 42, 53, 372, and 401 certification. It reduces chlorine, tastes & odors, microbial cysts, chemicals, and heavy metals, including lead. It also reduces trace chemicals, including Ibuprofen, bisphenol A and estrone.
  • 300 gallons/6 months filter capacity.

For Samsung Refrigerators: AmazonBasics Replacement Samsung DA29-00003G Premium Filtration

best water filter refrigerator

This AmazonBasics premium filtration Samsung DA29-00003G trumps the original Samsung filter infiltration performance, but it's cheaper. Here are some quick highlights.

  • 3-pack
  • NSF 42, 53, 372 and 401 certifications.
  • 300 gallons/6 months filter capacity.

If you are on a budget, Amazon also sells a standard filtration Samsung DA29-00003G filter and an advanced filtration Samsung DA29-00003G filter.

The Standard filter has NSF 42 and 372 certifications. This means it only targets chlorine and other tastes and orders. The NSF 372 certification means the filter is lead-free (doesn't leach lead into the water), not that it removes lead.

The Advanced filter adds NSF 53 certification, meaning it also removes harmful impurities, including chemicals and heavy metals.

The Premium filter has all these certifications plus NSF 401. It reduces emerging chemicals like Ibuprofen and DEET.

For LG Refrigerators: AmazonBasics Replacement LG LT700P Refrigerator Water Filter Premium Filtration

refrigerator water filter

It's the same deal for the LG LT700P as other AmazonBasics Premium filters. It comes with four NSF certifications: 42, 53, 372, and 401. It provides better protection than the OEM LG filter, for a bargain price.

Here are the highlights of the AmazonBasics LG LT700P filter.

  • 3-pack
  • 2 NSF 42, 53, 372 and 401 certified.
  • 200 gallons/6 months filter capacity.

Issues & Limitations

Believe it or not, we could find any major complaints regarding these AmazonBasics aftermarket filters. Considering it's not an OEM product, we were expecting issues with leaking or poor filtration.

But other than a few issues with installation, a majority of customers say the AmazonBasics filter is just as good, if not better than the more expensive original filter they were using.

If you choose the AmazonBasics premium filtration filters, you get better filtration performance than the original filters at a lower cost.

If you are tired of spending a lot of money on original refrigerator filters but don't want to risk low-quality generic filters, we highly recommend AmazonBasics.

The only downside we can think of is that they don't make filters for more refrigerator brands. For now, only LG, Samsung, and GE replacement filters are available.

Bottom Line

Normally, aftermarket filters have lower filtration performance than OEM filters. AmazonBasics is the exception.

7. Best External Refrigerator Filter: Woder WD-S-8K-DC Water Filtration System

Woder WD-S-8K-DC Water Filtration System

One of the major downsides of refrigerator water filters is the short filter lifespan. You need to get a new filter every 6 months.

If you find that expensive and too much of a hassle, get an external water filter and connect it to your refrigerator.

We recommend the Woder WD-S-8K-DC filtration system. It has a capacity of 8,480 gallons. It'll be years before you need to get a new filter.

Pros

  • Extra-long filter lifespan.
  • NSF certified.
  • High flow rate.
  • Reduces a wide range of impurities.

Cons

  • Requires under-sink installation.
  • Pricey (but cheaper in the long run).

Our Review

Woder WD-S-8K-DC features

The Woder WD-S-8K-DC is actually an under-sink water filter, not a refrigerator filter. But you can connect it to the back of your refrigerator to supply filtered water to the ice maker and water dispenser.

You'll need to buy a refrigerator kit with tubing, valves, and connectors. We recommend the iSpring ICEK fridge water line kit.

It can connect to any filtration system that uses ¼" fittings. Because the Wooder uses 3/8" tubing, you'll also need to buy a 3/8" to 1/4" adapter.

Once you connect the Woder system under your sink (which is easy and quick with no plumbing required), connect it to the fridge kit.

If you don't need filtered water from your faucet, you can connect the Wooder outlet tubing directly to the refrigerator water line using a 3/8" to 1/4" adapter.

If you want to also connect the Woder filter to your faucet, use the T-connector that comes with the iSpring kit to direct water to both the fridge and your faucet.

The iSpring kit comes with an in-line valve that allows you to open or shut off water flow to the refrigerator.

The Woder WD-S-8K-DC has NSF 42 and 372 certification. It's certified only for chlorine and taste & odors reduction.

But the manufacturer says it also reduces heavy metals and various chemicals.

Note: Once you connect the Woder WD-S-8K-DC system to your refrigerator, you don't need an internal fridge filter.

Some refrigerators keep working fine even without an internal filter. Others will stop dispensing water or display a warning light if they don't detect a filter.

If your refrigerator is the latter, check if the manufacturer sells a bypass plug.

Issues & Limitations

The Woder WD-S-8K-DC is more expensive than internal refrigerator water filters, especially when you add the cost of the refrigerator connection kit.

However, in the long run, it's actually cheaper. You don't have to buy a new filter for at least three years. In that time, you would have spent three times the price of the Woder filter on conventional refrigerator filters.

Bottom Line

The Woder WD-S-8K-DC is a great choice if you are tired of frequently buying new refrigerator water filters.

It easily connects under your sink and delivers thousands of gallons of filtered water to your refrigerator.

8. Best In-line Refrigerator Water Filter: Woder WD-S-8K Refrigerator In-line Filter

Woder WD-S-8K

If you already have a water line supplying tap water to your refrigerator, you can install the Woder WD-S-8K in-line filter.

It's the same filter like the one used in the Woder WD-S-8K-DC system above, but you connect it in-line instead of under the sink.

It comes with the same ultra-high capacity of 8,480 gallons, meaning you won't have to buy a new filter for at least three years.

Pros

  • Easily connects in-line into an existing water line.
  • High filtration capacity.
  • Strong flow rate.
  • Removes a wide range of impurities.

Cons

  • More expensive than internal refrigerator filters (but it's cheaper in the long run).

Our Review

Woder WD-S-8K-DC features

This is the same filter as the Woder WD-S-8K-DC. So details about filtration are similar. The Woder WD-S-8K has NSF 42 and 372 certification, meaning it is lead-free and reduces chlorine and tastes & odors.

It also reduces impurities normally covered under NSF 53 (though it doesn't have this certification), including chemicals and heavy metals.

To install this in-line filter, you'll need to have a ¼" line going to your refrigerator. It fits ¼" flexible copper or plastic tubing. It can also fit 1/8" PEX tubing.

Issues & Limitations

The Woder WD-S-8K costs more than internal refrigerator filters.

But over time, you'll save money. While conventional refrigerator filters need to be replaced every six months, the Woder WD-S-8K filter lasts at least three years. In that period, you would have easily spent three times the cost of the filter on refrigerator replacement filters.

Bottom Line

The Woder WD-S-8K in-line water filter is a great choice if you want an external water filter for your refrigerator but don't want to install an under-sink filter.

The Woder WD-S-8K installs along the waterline, meaning you don't have to give up any under-sink space.

Buyer's Guide: What to Consider When Buying a Refrigerator Water Filter

WQA & NSF Certified Water Filters

Compatibility

The first step when shopping for a refrigerator water filter is to find one that is compatible with your refrigerator model.

On most Amazon product pages for refrigerator filters, you can enter your refrigerator model to see if the filter will fit.

OEM vs. Aftermarket

This is a struggle most people have. On the one hand, original filters usually provide the best filtration performance and overall reliability. On the other, aftermarket filters are much cheaper.

Here's what you need to know.

OEM filters are indeed usually better at removing impurities. Most will have both NSF 42 and 53 certifications, and a few even carry the NSF 401 certification.

OEM is also less likely to have problems with leaking or clogging.

On the downside, they are darn expensive. Consumer Reports found that, for many refrigerators, you can spend close to the cost of the refrigerator on OEM filter replacements over the refrigerator's lifespan.

That's like paying double for the refrigerator.

Aftermarket filters are appealing for their affordable price point. You can get a 2 or 3-pack for less than the price of a single OEM filter.

On the downside, most aftermarket filters offer lower filtration performance, with most only carrying NSF 42 certification. That means you don't get protection from the most dangerous impurities.

But that's not always the case. Several manufacturers now make aftermarket filters that are just as good or even better than the OEM filter.

A good example is AmazonBasics. Their Premium Filtration filters carry four NSF certifications, while the OEM filters carry two.

If you can find an aftermarket filter that has at least NSF 42 and 53 certifications, give it a try. Just make sure you check that it's compatible with your refrigerator before you order. et

But if you've had a bad experience with aftermarket filters or want the peace of mind of having an original filter, choose an OEM filter.

NSF Certifications

Do not buy a filter that is not NSF-certified. Having NSF certification guarantees that the filter does what it says it does. Otherwise, you could be buying a low-quality filter that puts your family's health at risk.

Check what kind of certification the filter has.

Basics ones have NSF 42, which covers aesthetic impurities, including chlorine and tastes & odors. An NSF 42 filter just makes your water taste better. It does not necessarily make it safer if it contains harmful impurities.

For better protection, look for a filter with NSF 53 certification. This covers an assortment of harmful impurities, including lead, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other heavy metals and chemicals.

Advanced refrigerator filters also have NSF 401 certification. This covers emerging impurities that the EPA does not have any legal guidelines for.

They include chemicals like Ibuprofen, naproxen, Bisphenol A, and others. You can see the full list on NSF's website.

You may also come across filters with NSF 372 certification. This means they do not contain or leach lead into the water.

Generally, NSF 42 and 53 certifications are adequate for most people.

Filter Capacity

Check how many gallons the filter is good for. Most refrigerator filters last through 200 or 300 gallons, or about six months.

If you want to replace filters less frequently, get an external in-line filter.

Frequently Asked Questions About Refrigerator Water Filters

fluoride water filters

How long does a refrigerator water filter last?

Six months. Most refrigerator water filters have a lifespan of six months of about 200-300 gallons of water.

Can I use my refrigerator without a water filter?

It depends on your refrigerator brand. Some refrigerators work fine even if you remove the filter, just that you won't be getting filtered water. Others require a bypass plug to work without a refrigerator.

Are cheaper aftermarket refrigerator filters safe to use?

It depends on the particular aftermarket filter. Some are low quality and won't filter any impurities from the water, while others are just as good as the original filter or even better.

If the aftermarket filter carries NSF 42 and 53 certifications, it is safe to use as long as it is compatible with your refrigerator.

Can I use an external refrigerator filter?

Sure, you can. You can connect an under-sink filter or RO system to your refrigerator to supply it with filtered water.

Alternatively, install an in-line filter on the line that carries tap water to the refrigerator.

Note that you may need to use a bypass plug in your refrigerator to make sure it works well without an internal filter.
